Upasana Yoga SR 2013

Ashta gunas for refining developed through nitya ishwara upasana:

  1. dayA - compassion. consideration for other people. sensitivity of mind (Ivana)
  2. kSAnti - patience (portugalci)
  3. anasUya - not having jealousy seeing the prosperity, progress of others (Swami)
  4. shoucham - purity at thought, word, deed level. (Swami)
  5. ayasahinata - always enjoying a disposition which is calm and quiet physically, mentally and verbally (Swami)
  6. akarpanyam - freedom from self pity (Swami)
  7. aspruha - freedom from greed and attachement (Swami)

BG Chapter 13, 06

sadhana chathustaya sampathi - discrimination, dispassion, discipline, desire

  1. amanitvam - humility, not seeking recognition. by glorification discriminative power is lost. no humility -> no bhakti -> no jnanam
  2. adambhitvam - to be without pride. no pomp (conceit at the level of kayika)
  3. ahimsa - kayika, vacika, manasa
  4. ksanti - titiksa - acceptance of all choiceless situations of life ksama - capacity to wait for the future to unfold
  5. arjavam - uprightness and straightforwardness. alighment of threefold personality: kayika, vachika, manasa.
  6. acaryapasana - worship or reverence towards to teacher. sraddhah - learning to accept knowledge given by the veda as unique knowledge which is not available for any other sense organs to verify
  7. saucam - purity external and internal (words, thoughts)
  8. sthairyam - steadfastness on the path of righteusness. willpower. preservance. commitment.
  9. atma-vinigraha - control over the body and the senses. self-mastery.
  10. vairagya indriyartha / indriyarthesu vairagyam - renounciation of sense objects. mastery of the sense organs
  11. ahankarah - relinquishing of false ego and identification with the physical body as the self. freedom from conceit at verbal level (mental = amanitvam, actions = adambitvam)
  12. dukha-dosa-anudarsanam - do not be body-oriented. do not consider your life as something connected only to physical existence.
  13. asakti - mental detachment. avoidance of mental slavery with regard to any external objects, situation or person.
  14. anabhisvanga - avoiding over attachment. remaining even minded to what life gives.
  15. sama-citta - avoid both happiness and distress by temporary external circumstances. this gives the essense of karma yoga.
  16. avyabhicarini bhakti - devlotion to supreme Lord and realising of atma in all living beings. Even when the worldy transactions are going, and even when the worldy transactions are fullfilled, this devotee remembers with undivided attention: that my goal is something else.
  17. viveka-desa-avitam - resorting to a secluded place, now and then.
  18. aratir jana-samsadt - indifference to mundane topics and associations. do not get addicted to people's company.
  19. tattvajnanarthadarsanam - I should know what will I get out of this knowledge. regulary remind yourselves that Jnanam gives inner freedom.
  20. adhyatma-jnana nityatvam - systematic and consistent study of vedantic scritpts for a lenght of time under the guidance of competent acarya

BG Chapter 16, 01

daivi sampata:

  • abhayam - courage, self-confidence. faith in myself that I can follow and accomplish. spiritual courage.
  • satvasamsuddhih - purity of mind. for the mind certain types of thinking, thoughts like jealousy, hatred, fear are toxic. enjoying the virtues enumerated here
  • jnanayogavyasthitih - have a value for spiritual knowledge and know that knowledge never happens naturally. sravana, manana, nidhidhyasanam. commited pursuit.
  • danam - charity. remedy for mental problem called lobhah, which is caused by the sense of insecurity:
    1. wanting more and more tempts to adharma.
    2. danam takes care of the social order as it reduced the gap between poor and rich
    3. danam serves as a test for my detachment
    4. danam is important prayascitha karma
    5. makes the death peaceful as the person will give even his body happilly
  • damah - sense control. voluntarily directing the sense organs.
  • yajnah - worship of the Lord. ceremonial and conversion of all our activities into a form of worship. karma yoga.
  • svadhyayah - scriptural study. as a remedy against materialism.
  • arjavam - integrity. harmonious personality. thoughts-words-deeds inline, or:
    • body
    • prana
    • emotional (mind)
    • rational (intellect) amanitvam, adambitvam, ahimsa, santi arjavam (see Chapter 13)
  • ahimsa. in thoughts, words, deeds. but misplaced ahimsa is a problem too.
  • satyam. trughfullness. if hurtful truth is to be said - sugarcoating.
  • akrodhah - anger management. anger is an internal emotion, a form of pain. there is many expressions (and consequences). anger management is understanding the anger as an internal signal
  • tyagah - renunciation. Detachment. readiness to lose anything. mentally droping the ownership notion.
  • santih - freedom from violent emotional disturbances. (#13). inner relaxation only when the mind has santih. intellect will work. samah.
  • tapah - going through a painful experience voluntarily in controlled way to toughen the mind and body. increase titiksa. 2nd benefit is that we can avoid impulsive reactions. 3th benefit is being able to learn from pain.
  • apaisunam - not publicising defects of other people. cover up your virtues.
  • daya bhutesu - compassion towards all living beings.
  • aloluptvam - not yielding to the temptations of sense objects. specific sence control (damah general).
  • mardavam - gentleness in handling people, things. not being rude.
  • hrih - modesty and a healthy sense of shame
  • acapalam - capalam means restleness expressed at the body level
  • tejah - not being a victim of exploitation, goodness. do not cheat and do not get cheated, but apply non-violent methods first.
  • ksamah - enjoying a mind where anger does not rise at all. reduce your expectations and convert the rest to non-binding preferences.
  • dhrtih - preservance, fortitude. capacity to continue the sadhana in spite of obstacles.
  • saucam - cleaningness and orderliness. of the surrounding, dress, body and mind.
  • adrohah - ahimsa at mental level, not desiring to hurt others.
  • natimanita - freedom from superiority complex, pride. humility, humbleness. (#26)

asuri sampat

  1. dambha – pomp and show, exhibitionism of wealth (external pride)
  2. darpa – arrogance. disrespect great people, disrespect elderly people
  3. abhimanah - superiority complex. looking at oneself as one who deserve namaskara, honour, reverence... (internal pride)
  4. krodha – anger.
  5. parusyam – rudeness, harshness, impoliteness; mannerlessness.
  6. ajnanam - ignorance of dharma sastra, of ethics, morals.
